“But He was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His stripes we are healed.” (Isa 53:5 ESV)

Salem Lutheran Church and School extends a most gracious and heartfelt thanks for the partnership we will share in the saving Gospel of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus this coming school year. The most important objective for this partnership, which includes spiritual, mental, academic and social growth, will be the emphasis we place on the bond established between parents, teachers, staff and students. I pray that Isaiah’s words will be a guide for us through our experiences during the 2010-2011 school year. Our children need to constantly hear how much God loves them and how Christ has healed them with His stripes.

Our strong, Christ-centered, dedicated faculty/staff includes the addition of Mrs. Alexis Thibodeaux (Kindergarten), Mrs. Micah Putman (grade 3), Mrs. Lynne Borden (grade 5) and Mr. Larry Schaff (Athletic Director/P.E.). We have our strongest faculty yet with the addition of our new teachers. All four of them add a dimension of experience and expertise for our faculty with regards to their certifications and qualifications. They are well-trained and bring the highest standard of instructional expertise to our classrooms. They are very excited about joining our staff and working with you and your children.

However, parents must still attend the scheduled sessions on August 11th.

Important – Handbook Reminders!!!

READ CAREFULLY AS ALL SCHOOL FAMILIES WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL POLICIES.

Salem Lutheran School, its board, teachers and administration review parent, teacher, and student feedback annually. Any and all policy changes are made for the sole purpose of creating a school community that is both safe and conducive to student growth and learning. At Salem, we expect that parents will support and promote the rules and regulations that help us achieve our goals and expectations for the year. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support!

Tardy Policy: The tardy policy has changed so that the child is no longer punished for his/her parent’s responsibility to make sure he/she arrives to school on time.

At Salem, we recognize the importance of starting the school day on time. Being tardy disrupts the preparation and continuity of class. One of our goals is to teach the importance of being ready and on time for class. Therefore, the following policy has been placed into effect:

Parents are required to sign their child in when tardy at the office. Students are allowed three consequence free tardies. (weather, traffic, flat tire, etc.)

4th Tardy Letter home

6th Tardy $25 fine to be paid before your child returns the next day

7th Tardy Phone Call

8th Tardy $50 fine to be paid before your child returns the next day

9th Tardy $75 fine to be paid before your child returns the next day

Parent will be reported to a Truancy officer

* $100 fine for each successive tardy after the 9th.

* Students with more than 12 tardies will not be considered for enrollment the following year and may be asked to leave during the current year.

**** Only a written doctor’s note can excuse a tardy.

Detention: Detentions are assigned in accordance with the behavior policy in our Family Handbook. The only change to our detention policy has been regarding time, place and fee.

Detention: Detentions will be served on Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. under the direct supervision of either the principal or a teacher. Students receiving a detention will be assessed a $25 fee which needs to be brought the morning of their assigned detention. No one will be allowed in after 8:30 a.m. Students who miss Saturday detention will be assigned an additional detention and fee. After a child’s third detention, the detention fee increases to $50.

Cell Phones: Students are not allowed to have cell phones on campus during school hours – no exceptions. Salem will not hold cell phones any longer even on Fridays. The 1st violation will result in the phone being confiscated until a parent comes to pick the phone up from the principal. The 2nd violation will result in loss of the phone until the end of the year. Any further violation will be left to the discretion of the principal.

Dress Code: Parents are responsible for making sure their child attends school each day in full uniform. Students (girls or boys) with dyed, bleached or unnaturally highlighted hair will be sent home immediately should they arrive at school in this manner. Other changes to dress code enforcement include:

Boy’s hair should be neatly groomed and meet the following criteria: above the ear, eyebrow and collar. No fad haircuts will be allowed. NO DYED, BLEACHED OR FROSTED HAIR.

Salem sweatshirt – only school sweatshirts may be worn. Non-Salem sweatshirts will be confiscated. This does not include coats.

Tattoos (fake or real) and piercing of any type are not allowed.

White or navy blue undergarments only.

Girls: Purses are allowed in grades 5-8 only

*Additional dress code policies are included on the Bags/Uniforms/Books/Supplies page.

Emergency Communication: The school follows the same guidelines as the Jefferson Parish Public School System. Whenever the parish cancels school for the entire system, Salem is also closed. WWL 870 on your AM radio dial, and TV Channel 4 are the official broadcast stations of school information. In addition, Salem will communicate school closing and other emergencies by e-mail and internet (website and Salem Benefit Bar).

Attendance:

Students may not miss more than a total of 25 school days (excused/unexcused combined).

Students arriving after 9:30 a.m. and leaving before 2:45 p.m. will be documented with a ½ day’s absence.

Make-Up Work: When a student is absent, he/she will not receive their make-up work until he/she returns to school (work will not be sent home through the office). The teacher determines what work needs to be made up. The student will have the same number of days commensurate with the number of days absent plus one day.

Checking our early: Students who know they have a test to take may not be checked out early without consequences. This includes any unexcused absence or absence which is considered avoidable. The school will require a doctor’s note in order to make-up tests/quizzes without consequences.

Bags/Uniforms/Books/Supplies

Extra-curricular activities: All clubs, groups, etc. must be approved by the principal.
Jefferson Parish Bus Transportation

Returning bus students have been registered for the 2010-2011 school year. New students desiring bus service must contact the school office prior to July 15th in order to provide contact information, street address, etc. Only new students who live within the designated bus route will be eligible for bus service (The bus route does not include west of the Harvey canal and north of Holmes Blvd.)

Please e-mail the school office with your e-mail address if you have not already mailed it in. If you do not have an e-mail address, we will continue to send correspondences through the mail or in your child’s packet/folder on Thursdays. It is the responsibility of parents who do not have the capability to communicate with technology to inform the school office that you need us to communicate differently with you. You may e-mail your address to one of the following addresses: jalthage@salemls.org secretary@salemls.org

New Family Helpful Information

There will be a correspondence sent to all new families explaining many of the activities and events which take place during the year. This information will help you prepare for and understand what to expect as these events and activities approach.

Our Students and the Media

Salem Lutheran School takes pride in the fact that our school families accept and dedicate themselves to the same Christian morals and values. This year, we will be asking parents to continue their diligence in limiting and monitoring their children’s exposure to television, internet, music, and video games. We made huge strides last year in reducing behavior incidents due to our focus on keeping our children from hearing, seeing and learning adult content, language and violence through media avenues. Students who create behavior incidents due to their exposure to adult content or language will receive harsh consequences and are subject to suspension or expulsion at the principal’s discretion.

We will again ask that parents set certain rules during the school week this year (i.e. no television, 30 minutes of internet use or video games, etc.). Thank you for your cooperation in advance.

WHERE? Belle Meade Country Club: Time 10:00-12:00. There are lifeguards on duty at all times. All children knowing how to swim will be given a swim test. Your child must be able to swim the width of the pool without any type of assistance or flotation device to be considered a “swimmer”. If for any reason your child is unable to do this he/she will be classified a “non-swimmer” and will be required to wear an American Cross/Coast Guard approved life jacket, (yes this means no floaties) and stay in the roped off area or wading pool with our summer camp counselor’s. Any child not knowing how to swim must bring an approved life jacket. These are the pool rules and I will gladly enforce them; with that said, there will be no exceptions to this rule! Please apply sunscreen, and send a regular size bath towel (no beach towels, children tend to trip over the added lengths), and don’t forget a complete change of clothes, including a camp shirt and underwear.

Come to camp with your swimsuit on under your clothes. Everyone is required to wear a camp shirt over his/her swimsuits even while swimming, if you forget your extra camp shirt one will be provided and the cost will be added to your weekly bill! Girls that have completed 1st grade must wear one-piece swimsuits; girls Pre-K through Kindergarten may wear two piece swimsuits (this will help for bathroom trips). Label ALL ITEMS with your child’s name especially Camp shirts (they are all the same).
